Topic: Improved decision making – development of rutting model for WA pavements

This free webinar details the work done under the improved decision making (IDM) project – Stage 3 of the WARRIP program.

The aim of the multi stage IDM project was to:

• Improve Main Roads WA’s understanding of the performance of its pavement network based on TSD data
• Enhance Main Roads WA road deterioration models for more accurate performance prediction and maintenance candidate selection

Stage 3 of IDM was designed to model and validate rutting deterioration prediction on WA roads, which will provide additional and more tangible benefits to MRWA through more reliable rutting prediction. Models were developed using the full network Main Roads WA data that contained the pavement strength, traffic, pavement age, rutting, roughness, etc. and their combinations as observed in Western Australia.
Testing and validation of the developed models were conducted against observed deterioration.

The anticipated benefits from using the newly developed rut model are as follows:
• Overall lowering of the total transport cost due to timely intervention
• Lowering of the safety risk due to higher accuracy in rutting prediction
